Smugglers Plea: Let Us Work in Peace

| CURITIBA, Brazil – Federal Highway Police in Iguassu Falls on Monday, seized a minivan laden with over 17k packs of contraband cigarettes being smuggled from Paraguay. The trunk and interior cabin of the Opel Meriva was fully loaded, leaving room only for the driver, reported terra.com.br.

The bust came at about 6:30 am Monday morning when the highway police spotted a two-vehicle convoy of minivans which were obviously overloaded. Police gave chase and at one point came into contact with the smugglers on the police radio at which time one of the suspects made his plea for the police to let them do their job.

Eventually, police were able stop one of the vehicles and arrest the driver after a short foot chase. The other minivan made a clean getaway.

Between Friday and Sunday, Federal Highway Police seized nine vehicles carrying contraband cigarettes from Paraguay through the western cities of Parana taking more than 100 thousand packs of untaxed tobacco off the streets. Of the nine cars seized, three had been reported stolen. Six drivers were also arrested in the act of smuggling.
