| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – Civil Police (PC) in Iturama this morning are searching for 672 kilograms of marijuana which disappeared from the station house Sunday night. Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, the chief of police said that the marijuana was discovered missing on Monday.
In addition to the 11 police officers from Precinct 14, Iturama, specialized narcotics teams from the state capital arrived this morning to assist in the investigation. The chief said that preliminary results of the inquiry have established that the marijuana was seized in a drug raid two weeks ago and that it was stored in a bathroom at the precinct house.
On Sunday night or Monday morning, thieves entered through the font door of the precinct, turned off the alarm and took the drugs. There were no signs of forced entry. The precinct is located in the town center and has closed circuit surveillance cameras. No suspects were announced and the chief did not say weather the thieves were caught on camera.
The drugs were seized on 19 November, by Military Police (PM) in the adjacent state of Mato Grosso do Sul. International drug traffickers are the prime suspects in the smuggling case since the pickup truck carrying the drugs was registered in Paraguay.
Iturama is a small town located on the border of Mato Grosso do Sul, about 753 kilometers (468 miles) from the state capital, Belo Horizonte.
