Officials, looking for contraband, discovered the animal after opening the box for a routine inspection. The box had a recipient address in the city of Sao Paulo, over 500 km (310 miles) away.

The rescued animal is young and only 30 cm (11.8 inches) long. It was placed in a plastic jar with some wet towels. There was no food found in the Postal Service package. “It's an animal of extreme sensitivity. It needs sunlight to warm up, it really is a crime against the animal's life,” lamented veterinarian Wellington Inforzato to G1 Parana.

According to the Environmental Police, this is a common practice for those who are in the illegal trade of exotic animals. “The crime of trafficking animals is punishable by imprisonment if the perpetrators are identified,” Capt. Ricardo Eguedis told G1.

The captain reiterated that people should report this type of act.

According to www.animallaw.info: “Brazil’s Federal Constitution of 1988 dedicated an entire chapter to the protection of the country’s fauna and flora, and established the legal standards for environmental protection. Ten years later, the Environmental Crimes Law was enacted to complement the Constitution and impose criminal liability on environmental crimes. The law also reached out to deal with cruelty crimes against both domestic animals and wildlife.”
