| FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil – Two laborers working on a residential highrise in Blumenau had to be rescued on Tuesday after their scaffolding collapsed. The laborers were working on the facade of the building at the 12th floor when falling debris disabled the scaffold's control system, dumping them overboard and leaving them hanging from safety cables for over an hour.
The building, located in the Velha neighborhood, was undergoing a major remodeling when the accident occurred. Sergeant Valerio Pereira, head of the rescue operation, told terra.com.br that the men were left suspended after debris from a safety net fell into the control system of the scaffold causing it to tip.
The net caught one of the suspension cables that control the equipment and caused the worker's platform to list to one side dumping them over the safety rails. The construction company contacted a resident of a 13th floor apartment who allowed rescue workers to pull the men to safety through a window.
Firefighters say the men were saved by equipment which ensured that they didn't fall to their deaths when they went over the scaffolding's rails.
