| BRASILIA – Luxury Swiss watchmaker Hublot launched on November 30th, a limited-edition watch in honor of the Brazilian architect Oscar Neimeyer and the City of Brasilia. The famed architect, now 104 years old, designed the then futuristic city, which became the national capital in April, 1960.
In commemoration of his age, only 104 of the precision timepieces were produced. One of which, was given to its namesake—who is celebrating his 105th birthday on December 15th—-last month in Rio. On the bottom of the chronograph is the image of Congress, reportedly, the architect's favorite of the many government buildings he designed over a half century ago. The watch also features the colors yellow and green—the colors of the national flag.
“The idea for the watch was presented to Niemyer earlier this year and was well received. The brand's designers had the responsibility to develop a piece that represented the city and its creator well,” the brand's marketing director for Latin America, Benoit Vulliet, told G1 Brasilia.
The watch, which is named “Aero Bang Niemeyer,” is priced upon request. The architect received the first one made, at his home in Rio de Janiero in November. The designer said that even before the launch party, seven of the watches were already spoken for.
This isn't the first time Niemeyer has been honored by a watchmaker. Last year, during the celebrations of Brasilia's 50th anniversary, the Swiss brand Swatch launched the model “Traces of the Architect.”
In recent years, as the Brazilian economy has boomed and the national currency—the real—has grown ever stronger against falling euros and dollars, Brazil has emerged as an ever more important market for luxury goods.
