| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – The zoo in the capital reported on Tuesday, that the gorilla Idi Amin is being treated for an infection in his left forearm. The Western Lowland gorilla, named after the notorious African dictator, immigrated to Brazil in 1975, coming from France when he was only two years old.
Part of the skin on Idi's forearm became infected after a recent injury. Veterinarians prescribed doses of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines for the gorilla, who is responding well and is in no danger of dying. Idi lives with two girlfriends and, because of the rainy season, are being kept in a covered shelter.
According to the Zoological Foundation, the 39-year-old gorilla has been treated for ankle arthritis after being diagnosed with the disease. Testing determined that the condition is chronic. Idi had been single for the 27 years prior to this September, when Imbi and Kift, two females of the same species were brought from England to keep him company.
Idi Amin is considered to be one of the most distinguished inhabitants of the zoo in Belo Horizonte.
