The city's Christmas decorations, which in previous years caused controversy and even court cases, was much simpler this year. The display has speakers which begin playing traditional Christmas songs at dusk. The decorations include many traditions brought over by immigrants from the Azores, one of the main traditions in the city.

“I thought the décor was much simpler than in other years. But the tree is still very beautiful,” Ademar de Souza Carreiro, 47, who lives in Florianopolis, told terra.com.br. “You do not have to do much to make a nice tree. Simple ornaments, by the sea, already draws attention,” he added.

The main streets of the downtown shopping area of the city were also decorated with lights, garlands and flowers. In the Beira Mar Norte neighborhood, three-dimensional stars were mounted on poles.
