Suspect Attacked by Mob After Robbery

Brazil News

| RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Suspected robber, Virhilio Alexandre da Silva, 19, was taken to hospital after being pummeled by a crowd after he robbed the King of Pizza restaurant for the third time in a year and a half. He would have got away, say witnesses, but this time he decided to rob the patrons and employees too, reports terra.com.br

Police say that the suspect, apparently not happy with the U.S. $129 he got from the till, decided to rob the patrons and employees as well. The suspect, who in the past had robbed the restaurant with a gun, pulled up his shirt to show a military grenade taped to his body. Having instilled a healthy amount of fear, he herded everybody into the kitchen where he demanded wallets, cell phones, jewelry and cash.

”It was a very tense moment,” said one of the employees, who didn't want to be identified. He said that there were 11 customers in the restaurant during the robbery.

”He wanted even more money, but there was no more cash. As he was leaving, he took a cell phone from a customer who was just arriving and hadn’t seen the grenade. After taking his phone and running off, the guy took off after him crying 'stop thief!' Then two other victims decided to do the same. Then everybody took off to get their stuff back!” said the employee.

The angry crowd chased him for five hundred yards before surrounding him near a bus station. In a panic, the robber pulled the pin on his grenade and launched it at the crowd but it didn't explode. Sensing an opportunity, the crowd jumped the suspect, beat him and retrieved their belongings.

After the beating, the suspect ran off and nobody chased him.

Police, however, were able to identify the robbery suspect from surveillance cameras. They arrested him in a nearby slum, or favela, and took him to hospital for treatment before taking him to jail.
