Blumenau Hit By Heavy Rain and Landslides

| BLUMENAU, Brazil – Heavy rains and flooding have put this city, in the southern state of Santa Catarina, on alert. According to State Civil Defense, two landslides were reported on Wednesday in the city, reported terra.com.

The landslides hit the suburb of Vila Nova, impeding traffic on Altmirante Tamandare Street in the Progresso neighborhood where they covered the street. The level of the Itajai-Acu River, which traverses the city, was measured at 5.38 meters and rising at noon. According to the Civil Defense, the river reaches flood stage at 6 meters.

According to the weather service, Climatempo, the forecast is for rain throughout the day Wednesday. Thursday the forecast if for severe weather with heavy rain and thunderstorms all day.

Blumenau hosts the second largest Octoberfest in the world, after Munich Germany. The festival, known around the world, was first held in 1984 in an effort to lift the spirits of the city after epic flooding. The city has a large contingent of German and Swiss descendants and is known for its alpine influenced architecture.
