During a routine patrol, at about 5 pm on Wednesday evening, police found an abandoned aluminum vessel six meters long. The boat, equipped with an outboard engine, was loaded with 10 cases of cigarettes of foreign origin.

During another patrol later in the evening around 11 pm in Itaipu lake, the officers spotted a boat up river from the lake. Realizing the presence of police, the driver of the boat fled towards a place known as Burge Canal. During the chase, the police boat snagged a fishing net which caused the engine to breakdown.

A support team had to be called in to assist. That team, while searching the area found another, larger boat made of iron. This boat was laden with 100 boxed of cigarettes. The ilicit goods, lacking proper Brazilian tax stamps, were turned over the Federal Tax Authorities for destruction. There was no word on any arrests or suspects.

Smuggling of all types is a major law-enforcement challenge in southern Brazil. Electronics, tobacco, alcohol and even genetically modified seeds for farmers are all smuggled in the area from low tax and regulation countries that boarder Brazil such as Paraguay.
