Female Meat Packer Wins Dressing Room Suit

Worker was Forced to Parade in Underwear

CAMPINAS, Brazil – A labor court in Sao Paulo has ordered JBS, the owner of Bertin de Lins, one of Brazil's largest meat processors, to compensate a female employee U.S. $38,000 in punitive damages, reports TV Tem network.

According to the suit, the company's policy required the plaintiff and other packing plant workers to disrobe in the locker room and then exit into the main working area where they would change into the uniforms they wore while boning poultry.

The defense argued the change of clothes at the entrance to the common work area, in front of all employees, met the federal determination of sanitary control. The regional labor court in Campinas accepted the company's justification and denied compensation. The lawyer for the plaintiff then appealed to the Superior Labor Court which reversed the regional court ruling.

The Superior Labor Court found that intimacy is an inviolable right. JBS says it will appeal the ruling.

Campinas is a city, population 1.1 million (2010), in the coastal-interior region of the State of Sao Paulo. It is the third most populous municipality in the state and the seat of government for the county of the same name. The county is made up of 49 cities and has a combined population of 3.8 million.
