The drugs were being transported from Paraguay in a black Honda Civic with license plates from the neighboring state of Mato Grosso do Sul and were destined for sale in the capitol, Sao Paulo. During a high-speed chase, the driver lost control of the car which flipped and crashed into a fence. He tried to flee but was apprehended by police after a short chase.

Santos, who said that he lives in the city of Tres Lagoas in Mato Grosso do Sul, disobeyed an order from the police to stop the car as it passed by the Raposo Tavares Highway in the town of Presidente Venceslao 380 miles from the capitol.

Santos confessed that the drugs came from Paraguay. He said that he was to receive about U.S. $3,800 to deliver the marijuana to the state capitol. He has a criminal record and has already been convicted for international drug smuggling. He was taken to the Federal Police Department headquarters in the town of Presidente Prudente for processing.
