48 Tons of Stolen Copper and Aluminum Seized

Metal Stolen From Electrical and Telephone Companies

CAMPINAS, Brazil – Police seized 48 tons of copper and aluminum wire stolen from electrical and telephone companies in an operation on Thursday, reported EPTV on Friday.

The seized material was found stored in a junkyard in the Jardim Campos Eliseos. The owner of the yard was arrested for receiving stolen goods and the spools of stolen cable were secured. The investigation was opened after an increase in the number of copper and aluminum thefts in recent months.

Telefonica has identified the seized copper wires as the same used in the company's telephone network.

Campinas is a city, population 1.1 million (2010), in the coastal-interior region of the State of Sao Paulo. It is the third most populous municipality in the state and the seat of government for the county of the same name. The county is made up of 49 cities and has a combined population of 3.8 million.
