Military Police Arrest Robbery Suspect at the University of Sao Paulo
SAO PAULO, Brazil – In the first arrest by Military Police, inside the University of Sao Paulo campus since the end of the military dictatorship 26 years ago, a 23 year old valet was taken into custody for robbing two people, reports O Globo online.
The arrest was the first since the University of Sao Paulo signed an agreement with the Department of Public Safety last month to provide increased security and policing on campus. The agreement was denounced by some older faculty on campus who remember the presence of the Military Police during the dictatorship era when they were used to suppress demonstrations and ferret out anti-government activists.
According to the Secretary of Public Safety, two police officers were patrolling the campus when they received a complaint that a man on a black motorcycle had robbed two people. During a subsequent search of the campus, the police spotted the valet who matched the description of the robber. He was detained and searched by police who found backpacks belonging to the victims. In the backpacks were cell phones, notebooks documents and U.S. $175 in cash.
The victims were able to identify the valet as the robber. The suspect's motorcycle was seized and he was taken to the police station for processing. He will be charged with armed robbery. The bags and contents were returned to their owners.
