800 Volunteers to Clean Capitol's Beaches and Rivers
MANAUS, Brazil - Over 800 volunteers have signed up to participate in the Clean Up the World Day event in the capital of Amazonia. The volunteers will clean up the beaches and creeks along the city's riverfront.
The effort is part of a global event taking place in 130 countries, and involving an estimated 35 million volunteers who travel to beaches and rivers to collect garbage.
In Manaus, the 800 volunteers will work in the Puraquequara beaches in the east and the shores of the Taruma Acu bayou in the Taruma neighborhood. The Manaus event is a partnership with Coca-Cola and the city government.
The U.S. NGO The Ocean Conservancy, in cooperation with the United Nations Environmental Programm (UNEP), has coordinated the event since 1986 to raise awareness about the problem of polluted water resources around the globe.
