Hashish Continues to Flow From Paraguay

Brazil News

| CURITIBA, Brazil – Federal Police (PF) arrested a 22-year-old man on Wednesday who tried to board a flight in Iguassu Falls with 2.08 kilos of hashish on his person. According to the PF, the drug was divided into packages bound to his legs, hidden under his pants.

The arrest occurred about 3 pm, when police became suspicious of the passenger—who was trying to board a flight to Rio de Janeiro—because he appeared nervous during routine screening. When searching the young man, police found the drugs bound to his legs.

The suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation and indicated that there were more drugs in the insole of his shoes. He said that the hashish was purchased in Paraguay and was to be resold in Rio de Janeiro. The man was arrested and remanded to PF headquarters in Iguassu Falls. He was charged with international drug trafficking and faces, if convicted, 5 to 15 years imprisonment.

On Thursday, a 33-year-old Paraguayan woman was pulled off a bus and arrested after Federal Highway Police (PRF) found 1 kilo of hashish hidden inside the sandals she was wearing. The woman was a passenger on a bus traveling from Asuncion, Paraguay with connections to Rio de Janeiro, when it was stopped at a PRF checkpoint near the town of Ceu Azul, in western Parana near the international border.

The PRF was suspicious of the woman and singled her out for inspection. When confronted with the drugs in her shoes, the woman confessed. She told police that she was to deliver the drugs to a confederate in Sao Paulo and that she was to be paid U.S. $1,000 for delivery. The woman also faces 5 to 15 years imprisonment.
