BRASILIA – Federal Police announced the arrest of a woman late Monday afternoon at Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport in Brasília carrying 745 clothing buttons stuffed with cocaine. The woman, of Moroccan nationality, carried the buttons hidden inside her suitcase. Police discovered the drugs during a routine screening.
According to a Federal Police spokesman, the woman arrived from Morocco having made stops in Natal, Salvador and Sao Paulo. If she had not been arrested, the woman would have attempted to smuggle the drugs back to Morocco with a stop in Lisbon.
Under interrogation, the suspected drug mule stated that she bought the drugs in Sao Paulo. She said that she intended to transport the drugs in an effort to make money and that she is a house cleaner in Marrakesh, in the Southwest of Morocco. Police will not know the exact amount of drugs that she was transporting until after a forensic examination.
The woman, whose age was not released, will be charged with international drug trafficking and may be sentenced to between 10 and 15 years imprisonment. She was taken by police to the Federal Women's Prison where she will be held pending trail.
