According to a release from the Fire Department, there were no reports of casualties related to rain.

Maria Aparecida Fernandes, a meteorologist at the Amazon Protection System (SIPAM), says hailstorms are not an unheard of phenomenon during the month of October in the Amazon, a period of transition from the dry to rainy seasons.

She explained that hailstorms occur when the clouds have strong vertical growth. “As the temperature is lower, the water freezes and falls in solid form and does not melt completely. The moisture in the atmosphere and high temperature contribute to the phenomenon,” she said.
