Information panels with arrivals and departures will be installed at bus stations around Recife during the first half of the new year. By the mid-2012 the information will also be available on cell phones via text message.

Governor Eduardo Campos announced the news on this afternoon when he signed the order for the system. For the system to function, all the buses for urban transportation in the metropolitan region will have to have a GPS device installed to monitor the vehicle's position using the Global Positioning System.

The state government expects the new R$20 million (U.S. $11.3 million) system to be fully functional by July 2012 if everything goes smoothly. The new technology will allow the Greater Recife Metropolitan Transport Consortium oversee and monitor in real time, the location of each bus, its speed, and to calculate the speed of the bus line enabling them to estimate the next arrival.

The system will be implemented by of a consortium of Pernambuco companies: Cittati, Midiavox and Cerpap.
