Three Paraguayans also arrested in Parana bust

CURITIBA, Parana – Federal Police (PF) in Iguassu Falls seized 1.7 tons of drugs Tuesday afternoon after pulling over a van containing cargo from Paraguay. Around 12:40 pm, agents suspicion was aroused when they observed a van emerge from a thicket near a coffee shop. They followed the van to a roadside inn on Calle Jose Patrocinio. They approached the van and upon inspection found several packages wrapped in black plastic inside boxes containing products such as toys, clothing and kitchenware. When the officers opened one of the black packages they found marijuana.

The occupants then admitted to smuggling the drugs in from Paraguay and directed the agents to more drugs hidden inside the van. The suspects, 19, 23 and 25 years old, were from Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. The three were charged with international drug trafficking. They face between 5 and 15 years imprisonment.

The drugs are stored for evidence pending a judicial order authorizing incineration. The other goods were forwarded to the Federal Tax Authority (RECEITA).
