| PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil – A hail storm on Thursday, hit several cities in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, leaving them in a state of emergency. According to the Civil Defense authorities, the situation was most dire in Sao Geronimo, where 12,000 people were affected.
In addition to Sao Geronimo, a state of emergency was declared in Fazenda Vila Nova, Vale Real and Triunfo. Six other gaucho municipalities made a preliminary notification of disaster. Those six towns added 2,500 more to the count of those affected by the unusual storms.
Statewide 22,300 people were affected and more than 5,000 buildings were damaged. Ten people were left homeless and 8,100 were dislocated.
