The car was stopped by the PRF at a checkpoint on the BR-101 highway near the small town of Garuva, in the northern part of the state. The cash was hidden in the space where the passenger airbag should have been. The safety equipment was removed to make room for the American money, estimated to be equivalent to R$150,000 reals — the national currency.

The two men, driver and passenger, were employees of a foreign currency exchange group but they lacked documentation necessary for the legal transportation of large sums of cash. They were arrested and will be charged under the country's money laundering laws.
