| FLORIANOPOLIS, Santa Catarina – The last weekend of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere began with temperatures of 32º C (90º F.) and beaches crowded with beauties in Floripa. On Saturday, the heat was intense beginning in the early hours and by 10 am had reached its high for the day.
The roads leading to beaches were heavy with traffic. The SC-401, which leads to communities in the interior, was backed up for 6 km (4 miles) requiring extraordinary patience of drivers. The beaches of Joaquina an Campeche were among the most popular. The calm sea and low tides, unlike in recent weeks, allowed children and adults to enjoy a leisurely day swimming and sun bathing.
“I came to the beach last week when there was hardly any sand and the sea was terrible,” Valdo Luiz Talon, a 27-year-old beachgoer told reporter Fabrício Escandiuzzi. “Today, I was able to play handball on the beach and take a swim.”
With four days to go before the arrival of summer, 26-year-old architect Sabrina Gonçalves, told the reporter that the weekend will serve to give her an “upgrade” to her tan. “With this weekend I hope to get a cool tan for summer,” said the young woman, who was on Campeche beach around 1 pm on Saturday. “I know that this time of day isn't recommended for sunning, but it is just to get that tan for summer. I have to get ahead of my friends, many of whom are working today,” she said with a giggle.
According to the weather service, the temperature reached 32.6º C (90.6º F) in the early afternoon. The forecast, however, calls for the possibility of thunderstorms overnight.
