Police Seize Grenades in City of God

RIO DE JANIERO – Early Saturday morning police in the infamous City of God slum seized five handmade grenades that were to be used in attacks on units of the Pacifying Police Units (UPP), reported O Dia online.

According to a spokesman for the UPP in the City of God, acting on an anonymous tip that was received and passed on by the Military Police (PM), they were told of a gang of smugglers gathering in the Bariri neighborhood of City of God dealing drugs and plotting an attack on bases and patrols of the UPP.

When police arrived on the scene, the criminals fled. They left behind the five hand grenades, 90 bundles of marijuana, 65 bags of cocaine, 11 rocks of crack and a radio transmitter.

Launched in 2008 to reclaim previously lawless areas of Rio de Janeiro the UPP, or Pacifying Police Units, were created by the state government under Governor Sergio Cabral Filho. The controversial units aim to have the entire city, including the previously un-patrolled favelas, or slums, under police protection in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The City of God was made famous in the 2002 movie of the same name.
