According to the police, the girl, who was alone at the time of the accident, was playing with her father's gun when it discharged. The bullet hit the girl in the head.

The girl was evacuated from the favela on Pedra de Guaratiba by fire department helicopter and taken to hospital where she was revived and is undergoing surgery to remove the bullet and repair the damage. Her exact condition is unknown.

The girl's father was arrested and taken to the Pedra de Guaratiba police station where he will be automatically charged with possession of an illegal firearm.

Gun ownership is generally legal in Brazil but all firearms must be registered with the state. Approximately half of the firearms in Brazil are unregistered and thus illegal. A 2005 national referendum aimed at making gun ownership generally illegal was defeated.

Brazil is preparing to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Rio de Janeiro the 2016 Olympics.
