Woman Adjusting TV Antenna Dies from Electrical Shock

SÃO PAULO, Brazil – A woman, adjusting her TV antenna on the roof of a house in Osasco, in the São Paulo Metro area, died of an electrical shock from nearby high voltage wires. The woman was at home with her three children when she decided to fix the antenna, late Wednesday night, reported O Globo online today.

Maria da Conceção Silva, 30, was watching TV with her three children—ages 1 year, 6 months and 7 years—but the signal was not good. According to relatives, she decided to fix the antenna. It was windy when she climed up onto the roof to make the adjustment and she struggled with the antenna mast when she lost control and it tipped onto the high voltage wires.

Neighbors heard the woman scream and the sound of the shock. They rushed to help and called the fire department but it was too late, she was already dead. The fire department had to wait for the electric company to arrive on the scene to turn the power off before they could retrieve the woman's body.

Her husband complained that it took the electric company two hours to answer the call. A spokesman for the electric company, Eletropaulo, could not be reached for comment this morning.
