RIO DE JANEIRO – Military and civilian officials are conducting a nuclear disaster drill at the Angra Nuclear Power Plant complex in conjunction with the municipality of Angra dos Reis in southern Rio de Janeiro state, reported terra.com.
The exercises, scheduled for today and tomorrow, will simulate a radiation release emergency at the Angra 2 nuclear generating station in Angra dos Reis. People who live within a 5 km radius of the plant have volunteered for the exersise and will be evacuated to shelters located in public schools and at the nearby Brazilian Naval College.
The evacuation of the residents is being organized by the Military Police and the Federal Highway Administration. The armed forces are contributing aircraft, ships and land vehicles to the simulated evacuation. Firemen, civil defense and health professionals will do the job of measuring radiation in the environment and in the people being evacuated.
The exercise is conducted regularly by the President's Office of Institutional Security with support from the National Secretariat of Civil Defense and various federal, state and local governments.
The Angra Nuclear Power Plant is Brazil's only nuclear power plant. It is located in Angra dos Reis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It consists of Angra I, which came online in 1985 and Angra II added in 2000. Angra III is expected to come online in 2015.
