SAO PAULO (Brazil News Dispatch) – Police this week arrested three suspected members of a gang that robbed homes in this high-class suburb in western São Paulo. Two of the three were arrested on Friday after an accomplice, who was arrested the day before, confessed during interrogation and turned them in, reported terra.com.
The person arrested on Thursday morning raised casual suspicion by police in Campo Limpo, south of the capital. When contacted by police, she got out a car with a loaded handgun which police found during a search. The gun was loaded with five cartridges and there were more in the back seat.
Questioned at the police station, the 20-year-old woman, claimed that she only had the gun for personal protection. However, police noted that the woman's physical characteristics matched those of a woman who was part of a gang that robbed homes in the Morumbi area. Under interrogation, the woman confessed to participation in the home robberies. She also turned in her four criminal comrades.
Police, armed with arrest warrants, picked up two members of the gang and two remain at large.
The police went to the address provided by the informant and arrested a 22-year-old man who was the leader of the gang and a 25-year-old hairdresser. Police seized various items at the house related to the robberies, nine travel bags, two digital cameras, computers, DVD players, microphones, perfumes, jewelry, televisions, phones, clothes, watches and cash.
Both were identified by the victims. Everybody involved in the ring are expected to be indicted for theft and conspiracy. According to 89th Precinct spokesman, Carlos Batista, the investigation will continue to clarify the robberies and other crimes committed by the group.
The names of those arrested have not been released by police.
