Unusual temperatures even for Southern Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – A mass of polar air passed through the South and Southeast of the country and dropped temperatures below freezing and caused frost in some areas Thursday morning, reported O Globo online.
According to Epagri/Ciram, the meteorology agency of the Santa Catarina state government, the lowest temperatures recorded were in Urupema, 41 degrees; Bom Jardin da Serra, 40 degrees; and in São Joaquim, in the Santa Catarina mountains, the temperature dipped just below freezing.
In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, frost was reported in several cities, including Santana do Livramento, Cambara do Sul, Caxias do Sul and Santa Maria. In Bage, in the south of the state the temperature dropped to 33 degrees and frost was also reported.
In the interior of São Paulo state, temperatures were moderate with lows in the forties but on the southern coast the cold was more intense with temperatures dipping in to the upper thirties. Although the sun came out today, temperatures remained cold throughout the day.
Low temperatures and frost are expected to continue on Friday with frost also expected in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and central and southern Parana.
Temperatures this low and frost are uncommon in Brazil, even in the far southern parts of the country.
