According to employees of the clinic, the dog is in stable condition, but they are still worried because he was shot in the head. “Sergeant” has difficulty walking, but he is eating. On Wednesday, the vet said that the animal still ran the risk of death because of the site of the wound. She added, however, that all necessary medicine is being applied and that he is expected to recover.

Policeman Humberto Pereira, who responded to the shooting at a country estate in Novo Cardoso, said he plans to adopt “Sergeant” after the dog is discharged from the clinic. The vet thinks that if he continues to recover, he can be released in about a week.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with shooting “Sergeant” as well as two other dogs who died. The owner was released on bail but will have to answer to charges of animal abuse and illegal possession of a weapon. Police say that the man admitted to shooting the dogs because they were killing chickens and other animals on his estate.
