Emu & 23 Chicks Crossing Hwy

CUIABA, Mato Grosso – A male emu was spotted crossing the MT-060, known as Transpantaneira Highway in the Pantanal region, with 23 chicks in tow. The animals were spotted by a crew from TV Central America, affiliated with G1, who stopped to record the scene.

The reporter Erickson Rezende said that they went to the Pantanal on Monday to report on road conditions when they were suddenly faced with the flock of emus crossing the highway. Unlike most species, the task of caring for the young is taken up by the male rather than the female.

Besides being responsible for raising the children, the male emu also builds the nests for the females to lay eggs. As a reward for his hard work, the male may have up to nine mates at a time. The images were captured by cinematographer Frank Eduardo with the help of Edson Bacana.
