| SÃO LUIS, Brazil – Passing through Brazil, where environmentalists will stage demonstrations, Greenpeace's new ship Rainbow Warrior is spotted in San Marcos Bay. The ship is a platform to bring environmental issues to various cities of the country, serving as a 'bridge' for discussion and exposing the problems that still plague the worlds largest rainforest.

| SAO PAULO - Aziz Nacib Ab'Sáber, University of Sao Paulo researcher and leading expert in the physical geography of Brazil, as well as a voice in discussions on biodiversity and environmental conservation, died on Friday morning at 10:20 am in Sao Paulo. He was 87 years old.

| BRASILIA – The Brazilian defense minister, Celso Amorim, has confirmed the near total loss of one of Brazil's Antarctic outposts. “All the core base, which is where these facilities are concentrated, was lost,” said Amorim. “The exact degree of what happened has yet to be determined by experts, but the assessment is that actually almost everything was lost.”

| ANTARCTIC STATION COMANDANTE FERRAZ – A fire in the Brazilian military research base in Antarctica has wounded two and one is missing. According to the Brazilian Navy, the fire broke out early Saturday morning.

| GOIANIA, Brazil – Part of an ethanol plant caught fire Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Rio Verde, 232 km (144 mi) from Goiania. According to the Fire Department, the fire started in a cooling tower at the plant, which is located of the BR-060 highway.

| HAMAMATSU, Japan – Toyota unveiled on Tuesday the version of the Prius hybrid set to go on sale in Brazil during the second half of 2012, reported a G1 journalist who traveled to Japan at Toyota's invitation. The selling price for the car which combines an electric motor with a gasoline engine has not yet been set.

| SALVADOR, Brazil – About 300 canaries were seized in the municipality of Itanhem, 550 miles from the state capital, Salvador. During the raid, which police carried out last night and into this morning, four suspects were arrested and taken to the county jail.

| MANAUS, Amazonas – Wardens of the Environmental Police Battalion seized meat from two dolphins and an alligator on Saturday near the community of Supia, located on the banks of the Solimoes River, near the city of Manacapuru, 42 miles from the capital. The animals were in the possession of two fishermen, one 67 years old and another 66, who were using the meat to fish for piracatinga.

CUIABA, Mato Grosso – A male emu was spotted crossing the MT-060, known as Transpantaneira Highway in the Pantanal region, with 23 chicks in tow. The animals were spotted by a crew from TV Central America, affiliated with G1, who stopped to record the scene.

CURITIBA, Parana – A group of electrical and mechanical engineering students from the Federal Technological University of Parana (UTFPR) in Cornelio Procopio, converted an aging VW Beetle into an electrical car.
VIAMAO, Brazil – Residents of this city of almost 300,000, located in the Metropolitan Porto Alegre region, are mobilizing through the social networking site Facebook, to give a symbolic embrace of Taruma Lake, on September 14th at 2 pm. The date of the embrace was chosen specifically as it is the 270th anniversary of the founding of the city, reports terra.com.br.
