Video: Ethanol Plant Burning in Goias

| GOIANIA, Brazil – Part of an ethanol plant caught fire Tuesday afternoon in the municipality of Rio Verde, 232 km (144 mi) from Goiania. According to the Fire Department, the fire started in a cooling tower at the plant, which is located of the BR-060 highway.

New Law Banning Alcohol Sale to Minors

| SAO PAULO – State government health officials announced today, that as of Friday, there will be aggressive enforcement of the new law banning alcohol sales to minors. There will be sweeps in bars, restaurants, nightclubs and beach kiosks. Violators are subject to fines of up to R$87,00 reals ($47,000 USD) as well as other sanctions.

Burglar Passes Out After Finding Rum

SAO PAULO – Police arrested a young man over the weekend in Americana, 71 miles from the capital, after he broke into a vegetable stand to steal fruits, vegetables, eggs and a chicken. After gathering his booty, he found a bottle of rum beside a chair and apparently decided to rest and have a drink.

Americana is a municipality in the state of Sao Paulo. It has a population (2010) of about 200,000, many of whom are descendants of refugees from the Confederate States of America who immigrated after the U.S. Civil War

Tries to bribe officers, lands in jail

SALVADOR, Bahia – On Monday, 59-year-old Jorge Luis Matos was caught by Federal Highway Police (PRF) driving drunk on a highway in Bahia. Police said that after the man failed a breathalyzer test, he tried to bribe highway police into letting him escape, offering them R$200 (about U.S.$113) .
