| SALVADOR, Brazil – About 300 canaries were seized in the municipality of Itanhem, 550 miles from the state capital, Salvador. During the raid, which police carried out last night and into this morning, four suspects were arrested and taken to the county jail.
After consulting the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) the men were assessed a fine of U.S. $30 per bird and released. The police said that the raid came as the result of anonymous tips.
Although police said that the birds were living in aviaries at three homes and were divided into 10 enclosures. The birds will be released into the wild at about 8 am on Friday in the town of Sao Jose do Alcobaca.
