Suspect tried to claim the cash but couldn't say where he got it
CAMPO GRANDE, Mato Grosso do Sul – A man was arrested by agents of the Department of Border Operations (DOF) after throwing a bag with $100 thousand reals (about $56 thousand USD) in cash out the window of a car. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon on a backwoods road near the border with Paraguay in Japora, 296 miles from the state capital, reported.
According to police, a passenger in a truck with Goiania license plates threw a bag out the vehicle's window after sighting a police checkpoint. Inside the bag, agents found $100 thousand reals in $10 and $20 real denominations.
Three men were arrested, including a passenger, a man of 28, who claimed ownership of the cash. As the man couldn't say the origin of the money, or why he threw it out the window, police doubted it was his and arrested him for suspected money laundering.
Initially, the DOF said that the three men and money were remanded to the Federal Police (PF) station in Ponta Pora, but in the afternoon, the information was revised. According to the DOF, the prisoners and the $100,000 were taken to the PF in Navarai.
