Japanese authorities have held Karen Pereira in custody since her arrest about 15 days ago. Karen lived in the city of Ibaraki, in the Northern region of Japan where she worked as an employee in a bread factory.

The suspect departed Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo and made a stopover in Doha (Qatar) before landing at Kansai. During customs inspection, the Brazilian woman drew extra scrutiny because her pink laptop computer was heavier than normal. The inspectors put her laptop through an X-ray machine, which showed the presence of the cocaine.

Japanese officials estimate that the amount of drugs seized has a street market value of about $4.1 million USD. The woman said that she transported the drugs at the request of her boyfriend, who promised to pay her about $62 thousand USD.
