| RIO DE JANEIRO – Police arrested a man suspected of hunting wild animals and selling exotic meats to restaurants. The suspect was caught red-handed in Araruama in the Lakes Region of Rio. The case was filed by the Civil Police (PC) on Tuesday.
Officers of the 118th Precinct (Araruama) searched the suspect's residence and found cavies, capybaras, armadillos and lizards killed and frozen in a cold room he maintained in his home. Police also seized eight bird species, nets for capturing birds as well as specific traps for wild animals.
Shotgun shells, 32 gauge, a gun used for poaching, were also found at the man's residence. According to police, investigations indicate that the suspect hunted animals to order. The crime occurred in the forest reserve Pocas das Antas and the Juturnaiba Lagoon in Araruama.
The suspect was charged with crimes against the environment and faces imprisonment and fines if convicted.
