RECIFE, Pernambuco – A man suspected of involvement in the assault on a tourist catamaran on the south coast of Pernambuco, which occurred last Wednesday, was identified by the Civil Police (PC). Originally, police said that the heist was pulled off by four men who escaped in a stolen Opel Meriva. “We came across some information on the owner of the car. We saw that the car used for the getaway was not really stolen. Now, we hope to figure out who the other four involved in the crime were,” said Carlos Leite, of the PC Pernambuco.

Last Friday, police released photos taken by a tourist on another boat that show the four assailants fleeing with the victims' belongings on Carneiros Beach in the city of Tamandare. They took money, purses, cameras, cell phones, wallets and clothing belonging to more than 60 Brazilian and foreign turists.

According to police, the robbers hijacked another boat, taking the captain hostage and forcing him to take them to the catamaran, which was full of tourists, to carry out the robbery. After the assault, they through the key to the catamaran into the sea and fled in the hijacked boat. They dropped the hostage off on Carneiros Beach. Once on land, they made their escape in a Opel Miriva. The victims on the catamaran were rescued by another boat and reported the crime to police.
