| PARIS – An Air France flight that departed Paris on Thursday, bound for Sao Paulo, made an emergency landing. The flight returned to Charles de Gaulle airport after a fire-detection system alarm sounded.
Banker Geraldo da Silva Silveira, who was vacationing with this wife in the French capital, said the failure, which was detected at about 2:15 am, caused much concern among the passengers.
”Many people were nervous. The plane had to dump fuel at sea in order to land safely in Paris,” the banker told G1 from Paris, where he was awaiting a new flight to return to Brazil.
In a statement released on Friday, the company said that the return to Paris and the cancellation of the flight was made “in accordance with standard procedures and as a precaution for safety.”
According to the company, all 185 passengers were sent to hotels and re booked on other Air France flights. “Due to the cancellation of AF456 – renamed AF456A – left Paris today at 8:45 am local time, on a different machine and is scheduled for arrival in Sao Paulo at 17:30 (GMT),” said Air France in a text.
According to the banker, Silveira, many passengers were booked on connecting flights to other South American cities, such as Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Lima.
According to The Aviation Herald, on February 2nd, 2012, Air France flight AF454 from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Sao Paulo Guarulhos with 277 passengers aboard had to turn back to Paris and make an emergency landing about 90 minutes after departure due to engine vibrations.
On May 31st, 2009, Air France flight AF447 which departed from Rio de Janeiro heading to Paris, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 228 people on board.
