| CAMPO GRANDE, Mato Grosso do Sul – An 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday carrying 393 kg (867 lbs) of marijuana in Amambai, 342 km (213 miles) from the capital. Federal Police (PF) made the arrest late last night as part of Operation Sentinel, which fights crime along Brazil's international borders.
According to police, during a patrol of local villages they noticed a suspicious car parked near a hotel. The car appeared to be weighted down in the rear, so they staked out the car. When the driver appeared, they asked him to open the trunk, which was loaded with bricks of marijuana.
Asked about the dope, the young man admitted that he was hired to transport the load from Amambai to Caarapo 83 km (52 miles) away. He was to receive R$5,000 reals (about $2,800 USD) for his services.
Police took the young man, his car and the drugs to the Federal Police station in Dourados. He will be charged with the crime of drug trafficking and, if convicted, faces 5 to 15 years imprisonment.
