Rehabilitated Seal to Return to Sea

Brazil News

| SAO PAULO – A baby fur seal that was found six months ago on a beach in Peruibe, on the southern coast of the state, will be returned to sea on Monday. Worn down from an infection, she underwent rehabilitation at the Municipal Aquarium of Santos. Marine biologists believe that the pup, after becoming sick and weak, was separated from her pod and dragged ashore by currents.

Pia, as she was named by handlers, weighed just 33 pounds when she arrived and now weighs 62 pounds. According to veterinarian Gustavo Dutra, she's strong, healthy and ready to look after herself in the wild. She will be released about 31 miles from shore.

Vets at the aquarium tagged one of the seal's fins, which will help them to identify her if she reappears on a beach somewhere. The vets hope that she can follow the sea currents moving south along the coast to Uruguay, where the species lives.

“The policy of the center is to release animals after they have been rehabilitated rather than to put them on display. This animal is ready for release, the vet told G1 Sao Paulo.

Animal handler Maria Maura de Oliveira was responsible for the day-to-day feeding and caring for the wayward pub during her rehabilitation. Although Maria is happy with the turn of events, she cannot hide her aching heart.
