Life Expectancy Increases in Brazil

| BRASILIA – Data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that life expectancy at birth in Brazil reached 73.5 years in 2010. The mortality tables were published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday.

A Brazilian born just three decades ago was expected to live to just 62 years of age. Over the last 30 years, life expectancy increased by 11.5 years. According to the IBGE, in the previous survey, the rate was 73.2 years. By comparison, the United States overall life expectancy at birth in 2010 was 77.8 years, a difference of 4.3 years.

The data also indicate that the infant mortality rate fell to 21.63 deaths per thousand live births. Three decades ago the number was 69.12. The U.S. infant mortality rate was 6.3 per one thousand live births, about 1/3 the Brazilian rate.
