| RIO DE JANEIRO – The Brazilian magazine Epoca this week published a previously unseen image of the future president being interrogated at the Military Court of Rio. The black and white photo, taken in November 1970, shows a 22-year-old Dilma Rousseff being questioned about her participation in the armed struggle against the military dictatorship.
The photo is from the new book “Life Wants Courage” which goes on sale this month in Brazil. The photo, previously unpublished, appears in the book by journalist Ricardo Amaral. The author, who was an adviser to the cabinet and the presidential campaign, dug up the image from the case file on Dilma in the Military Court of Justice.
The officers conducting the interrogation can be seen hiding the faces as the future president sits before them—seemingly at peace with herself—after being tortured for 22 days.
The presidential palace has not commented on the image. Dilma, as the president is universally known here, rarely speaks of events from the era.
