| SAO PAULO – An Englishman was arrested on Thursday afternoon at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo trying to board a flight with cocaine hidden in his digestive tract. Federal Police (PF) detained the man in the departure lounge as he was waiting to board a flight to Rio de Janeiro.
“Before checking in on a flight to Rio de Janeiro, he was approached for a routine inspection. When examining the two passports he carried—one Nigerian and one British—we noticed discrepancies between the two,” PF spokesman Jose Alonso told G1 Sao Paulo.
Police took the suspect to a local hospital for an x-ray. A tomographic image showed a total of 89 capsules passing through the man's system. After they were passed, PF determined that they contained 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lbs) of pure cocaine.
The police believe that the drug was to be distributed in European cities. The man was charged with international drug trafficking and, if convicted, faces 5 to fifteen years imprisonment.
