65-Year Marriage Celebrated

Brazil News

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – On Christmas Eve, retirees Sebastiana de Oliveira Nates, 82, and Isauro Ferreira Nates, 86, celebrated 65 years of marriage. The family gathered together at the Campo Grande home belonging to one of the couples five daughters. Only about 1.2% of all marriages last as long.

One hundred and thirty people, including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the couple traveled from far and wide to be with the loving couple for the special occasion. The festivities included a blessing, renewed vows, exchange of rings and in the end, a tender kiss. Moments to symbolize decades of marriage.

“Although we live in another state, we couldn't fail to attend this celebration,” businesswoman Rejane Oliveira Braga, a granddaughter of the couple, told G1 MS.

Lawyer Maria Augusta married three years ago and said she would strive to follow the example of her grandparents. “The memories we have of them is of much camaraderie, tolerance, respect, love and dedication. A real life lesson.”

The couple says that they had many difficulties during their 65 years of marriage, but to make it this far the recipe is not so complicated. “It takes perseverance and acceptance to work. We had many difficulties, but we overcame them and here we are,” said Dona Sebastiana.

“It was a simple life, but a very good one that we have had all these years. I don't know if I always did the right thing, but here we are together and we have a wonderful family,” added Dom Isauro.
