Police Seize TVs Stuffed with Cash

| MANAUS, Amazonas – On Saturday, Federal Police (PM) in Manaus found R$144,000 ($77,000 USD) in cash hidden inside two flat screen TV sets during a routine inspection. The appliances were on board a vessel in the Port of Manaus which was about to leave for Tabatinga.

According to the PF spokesman, the money was in a boat that was about to sail from Manaus to the city of Tabatinga, 1,105 km (687 miles) up the Amazon River from the capital, Manaus. Tabatinga sits adjacent to the Colombian city of Leticia and the Peruvian city of Santa Rosa de Yavari. The port city is considered a major entry point for cocaine in Brazil.

The captain of the ship and other suspects were briefly detained and questioned by police. After giving their statements, they were released. The PF referred the case to the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (DRE) for further investigation. The cash was seized under authority of Brazil's strict money laundering laws.
