| RIO DE JANEIRO – Police this morning seized an amount of cash estimated to be over R$2 million from a mansion being used by bookies involved in the numbers racket. Police needed a shopping cart to help load the cash, worth just over one million U.S. dollars, into vehicles to be transported to secure facilities where the money is still being counted.
Searching the home in Barra da Tijuca, in the West Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, police found the cash hidden behind a refrigerator in the lining of the roof, in false compartments, in a toilet and even in the sewer.
Also found were spreadsheets showing that the organization received over $R3 million in September alone – just in the city of Duque de Caxias – in the coastal lowlands.
Police say they received a tip on a telephone hotline informing them of the activities at the luxury home. On entering the house, officers found no one from the owner's family, only employees. Some rooms were locked and could not be breached for lack of a search and seizure warrant. Family lawyers were on scene to protect the owner's rights.
Without the warrant, the police were on duty throughout the night on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday and they climbed a tree to watch the movement inside the house. They stopped cars from leaving the garage until the warrant was issued.
At 6 am, the warrant was issued. The police searched every corner of the house.
The police broke open the main gate which gives access to the site of the mansion and ransacked the place, including garbage containers to see if anything had been thrown away quickly. Three vehicles, a black Corolla, a Cross and a Volkswagen Fox, who were in the garage were also searched.
Yesterday, police in Rio seized over 220 Christmas gift baskets that were to be distributed to players and workers in the numbers racket.
