| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – On Friday, guards at Presídio Sebastião Satiro Prison caught a prisoner returning from furlough stuffed with 50 balloons of narcotics. The man, Ildo Francisco Souto, 35, was taken to an area hospital where an x-ray image confirmed the presence of the balloons in the his digestive tract.
According to Sargent Mario Lucio, the prison received an anonymous tip informing them that the prisoner, who had been on Christmas furlough, was returning with drugs. When confronted, Ildo admitted that he had swallowed the drugs. After confessing, he offered to produce the balloons but was not able to.
With the prisoner's permission, doctors administered a laxative to assist the man to pass the contraband. After a few hours, all the balloons were evacuated from the prisoner's system. The prisoner admitted to authorities that the drugs were his and claimed that they were for personal consumption only.
Authorities say that the fifty balloons were filled with marijuana, cocaine, and crack. Because of the large amount of narcotics, police did not believe that they were for personal use.
After passing the balloons, guards took him to the police station where prison officials presented the evidence of drug trafficking and asked that he be charged with a new crime. Police say he will be charged with drug trafficking and, if convicted, will spend quite a bit more time at the prison. He was already serving time for murder.
