| SAO PAULO – On Friday, the Federal Police (PF) at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo arrested a woman carrying cocaine hidden in her bra. The PF say that the 34-year-old woman, born in the Republic of Guyana, was trying to board a flight to Entebbe, Uganda, when she was caught.
During a routine x-ray of the woman’s carry-on baggage, officers noticed the presence of a suspicious organic substance in the woman’s bag. Closer inspection revealed 9.5 kg (21 lbs) of pure cocaine hidden in the cups several of the bras in the woman’s baggage.
On Thursday, another South American woman, 24, born in French Guiana, was arrested while trying to board a flight to Paris. Again, a routine x-ray revealed a suspicious substance in the woman’s baggage, which upon inspection turned out to be 4.5 kg (10 lbs) pure cocaine wrapped in the false bottom of a backpack which was inside of the woman’s suitcase.
Both women face charges of international drug trafficking and may be sentenced to between 5 years 10 months to 25 years imprisonment if convicted. Young people from around the world - mostly women - are arrested several times per week at Guarulhos trying to board flights to Europe, Africa and the Middle East while carrying cocaine.
