| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – The gorilla Idi Amin, 38, died Wednesday morning at the Zoo in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais state. The animal had undergone a clinical procedure, when he died at about 11 o’clock this morning. Veterinarians will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The Western Lowland gorilla, named after the notorious African dictator, immigrated to Brazil in 1975, coming from France when he was only two years old. Idi, as he was affectionately known at the zoo, remained single for 27 years, until September 2011, when zookeepers introduced two female “girlfriends” to keep him company. The two females, which came from England, were named Imbi and Kifta and lived together with Idi at the zoo.
In December last year, Idi – one of the most distinguished inhabitants of the Zoo in Belo Horizonte – was treated and medicated for an infection in his left forearm. Part of the skin became infected after the injury, according to the Zoological Foundation.
